How to use it
- Choose the country whose labour law covers your job.
- Enter your first and last day of work, and your last monthly wage. In Saudi Arabia that includes allowances; in the UAE it is basic salary only.
- In Saudi Arabia, choose how the job ended. In the UAE, add any days of unpaid leave. The award and the breakdown update as you type.
The formula
Saudi: ½ month per year for 5 years, then 1 month per year · UAE: 21 days per year for 5 years, then 30 days
Both laws pay part years in proportion. Saudi Arabia reduces the award for resignation before 10 years; the UAE does not, but caps the total at 2 years of basic salary.
Worked example
You worked 8 years and your last wage was SAR 10,000 a month (basic plus allowances).
First 5 years: 5 × ½ × 10,000 = SAR 25,000. Next 3 years: 3 × 10,000 = SAR 30,000. Full award: SAR 55,000.
Your basic salary is AED 5,000 a month and you worked 6 years and 4 months.
The remaining 1 year and 4 months: 1.333 × 30 × 166.67 = AED 6,667. Total gratuity ≈ AED 24,167, whether you resigned or were terminated.
Assumptions
- Service length is counted in days, including the first and last day, and divided by 365.
- The wage you enter is your last wage. Commissions and other variable pay are included only if your contract does not exclude them.
- UAE rules apply to foreign employees in the private sector. UAE nationals are covered by the pension system instead.
Common mistakes
- Using basic salary in Saudi Arabia. The law uses the full wage, including housing and other regular allowances.
- Including allowances in the UAE. The UAE gratuity uses basic salary only.
- Assuming resignation always reduces the award. In the UAE it does not, and in Saudi Arabia certain resignations still earn the full award.
Questions
Do I get end-of-service if I resign?
In the UAE, yes — the same amount as on termination, once you have a year of service. In Saudi Arabia, resignation pays nothing under 2 years, one third from 2 to 5 years, two thirds from over 5 to under 10 years, and the full award after 10 years.
How soon must the employer pay?
In the UAE, within 14 days of the contract ending. In Saudi Arabia, within one week, or two weeks if you resigned.
Does probation count?
Yes, if you stayed on after probation it counts as service. If employment ends during probation in the UAE, no gratuity is due because the one-year minimum is not met.
