Order applied: discount first, then tax on the chosen base, then the fixed fee.

How to use it

  1. Enter the original price and the discount percentage.
  2. Optionally add the tax or VAT rate and a fixed fee such as shipping.
  3. Choose whether tax applies to the discounted or the original price, then read the final price and the full breakdown.

The formula

Final = (Price − Price × D%) + Tax + Fee

Tax is a percentage of either the discounted price (usual for store discounts) or the original price (some coupons and rebates). The fixed fee is added last and is neither discounted nor taxed.

Worked example

A jacket costs 80 with 30% off, plus 16% sales tax and 4 shipping.

Discount = 24, so the sale price is 56.

Tax on 56 = 8.96. Final price = 56 + 8.96 + 4 = 68.96.

Assumptions

  • One discount is applied. For two discounts in a row, run the calculator twice.
  • The fee is a fixed amount in the same currency.

Common mistakes

  • Adding two discounts together. 20% then 10% is a 28% total discount, not 30%.
  • Assuming the shelf price already includes tax. In many countries it does; in the US it usually does not.

Questions

Is tax charged before or after a discount?

For an ordinary store discount, VAT and sales tax are normally charged on the price you actually pay — after the discount. Some manufacturer coupons are taxed on the original price. Check your local rules.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For 56 at 30% off: 56 ÷ 0.7 = 80.
